Wapping Area Guide
Where are we?
Wapping & Limehouse hug the northern banks of the Thames as the river leaves the City and heads for Canary Wharf. Generally considered to be bordered by Tower Bridge to the Wast and Westferry to the East, the area is surprisingly traffic-free as the Commercial Road and the Highway keep traffic off the area’s historic cobbled streets.
Why should I buy here?
There is a historic riverside charm here that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The area is packed with riverside pubs claiming to be the oldest on the Thames (it’s hard to say which is right) and the transport links are surprisingly plentiful. There’s very little development space left to develop meaning you won’t be swamped with new builds in coming years, although Berkeley Group have managed to find space for the 22 storey London Dock on the western edge bringing a further 180,000sqft of retail and commercial space to the area.
What can I buy here?
If you love a warehouse this is the place to be. Many of these historic buildings were converted by the LDDC through the 1980s and 90s and have been sympathetically complimented by modern builds away from the river. You don’t need to be near the river to have a water view as the area also encompasses St Catherine’s Dock, the Shadwell Basin and the Limehouse Basin all connected with a series of canals. If you’re after something a little more cost effective there are several pot-war buildings further north surrounding Shadwell station and Watney Market.
Where can I go out?
If a riverside walk and a good pub lunch is your thing, you can’t beat Wapping and Limehouse. Notable offerings include the Prospect of Whitby or the Grapes. The former Barley Mow is now a hugely popular gastropub run by Gordon Ramsey. Further afield, you’re right on the edge of the square mile meaning the whole of London is open to you and a shirt hop on the DLR gets you to Canary Wharf and West India Quay.
How about going out for a meal?
This riverside enclave is peppered with quality dining options including Bottega and Il Bordello offering quality Italian fayre, or Smith’s with a more authentic riverside seafood offering. Bravas is great for tapas and cocktails with influences from the northern Spanish region of Basque.
